Meanings of Silence
I think silence can both be beneficial and debilitating, especially when having too much or too little. Therefore, one must learn to balance between having too much or too little of silence. I have actually experienced and felt the deathly effects of silence for a long time during my times of severe depression. I have also had some pleasant experiences with silence. Many people have their own unique opinions on silence as it appears and occurs to them.
When you are silent sometimes people may think something is wrong with you when there is not. I get frustrated when people have asked me what is wrong when I don’t respond in the way they expect me to which I understand is normal for society when they have little knowledge on mental illness. They just jump right to conclusions and that puts me on edge, on guard, and in defense mode because of how many times people have taken advantage of me when I used to express myself. People need to understand diversity more and that life is always changing but society always seems to expect the same thing all the time. The saying “silent but deadly” fits perfectly in describing what depression is like but most people focus more on the lighter side of the saying and don’t realize how much of the saying applies to events also happening in the world.
In times of experiencing silence accidentally there is usually people around and there is a sense of awkwardness and when I am depressed the silence comes to me uninvited. The occasions of silence felt pretty unsettling. Other times I welcomed silence when I felt…
