Describe the arguments for and against the legalization, or at least the decriminalization, of marijuana.

Marijuana Madness

The use of Marijuana dates back to 2737 B.C. to treat various ailments as stated in the textbook. Today Marijuana has evolved into many negative stigmas such as “dope fiend” and it being a gateway drug therefore people are saying that it should not be legalized or even used. One of the arguments against legalization and decriminalization of marijuana include the fact that it is a gateway drug. The many statistics proving this were found in the textbook saying that there are many stages of drug use. There is also research showing there is a strong relationship between hard drugs, alcohol, and smoking, and finding that a person who tries one drug moves on to experiment with another type of drug. In my own personal experience with drugs, I found that I too went through the stages of drinking, smoking cigarettes, smoking marijuana, and that led to the use of harder drugs afterwards. I also realized that the people who I smoked marijuana with, had other connections to harder drugs. So in that respect, I agree with the particular arguments against the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana. A second reason people are against the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana is probably because it is the most commonly used and most heavily trafficked illicit drug in the world which makes it harder to control despite the prevailing…
